Self-esteem and self-confidence are important factors that can greatly impact the quality of your life. While they are related, they are not the same thing. Self-esteem refers to your overall appreciation and valuation of yourself, while self-confidence is your belief in your own abilities. It’s normal to feel more confident in certain situations and less so in others.
Low self-esteem or self-confidence can be limiting or even debilitating. Negative experiences can contribute to negative thinking patterns, leading to a cycle of disappointment. For example, if you receive a low mark on an assignment and have low self-confidence, you may think, “I must be stupid, this proves it.” However, if you have healthy self-esteem, you may think, “I wonder where I went wrong? I’ll find out so that I can do better next time.”
How low self-esteem or self-confidence can affect you
Low self-confidence can lead to shyness, communication issues, social anxiety, and a lack of assertiveness. Low self-esteem may also cause you to develop an inner critic that can contribute to feelings of sadness, anxiety, or anger. Believing your inner critic can cause you to focus on your mistakes, expect the worst, and avoid challenges or situations where you may be judged by others. This can negatively impact your academic performance, personal relationships, and communication skills.
To improve your self-esteem and self-confidence, it’s important to practice self-acceptance, get to know yourself, reprogram your thinking, set achievable goals, and seek support. By doing these things, you can learn to appreciate and value yourself, and build the belief in your abilities to tackle life’s challenges and participate in enjoyable and rewarding experiences.
